The devil is a liar; God hates sin, and “the wages of sin is death” (Rom. 6:23). “God knows that in the day you eat from it your eyes will be opened, and you will be like God, knowing good and evil,” Satan said of the forbidden fruit (3:5). There was some element of truth to that statement. Adam and Eve, who had never before known evil, would surely know it now! But do you see what Satan was doing? He was convincing Eve that sin would actually enable liberation and self-actualization!
